Door cost page · fees checked October 2026
Digital products — planners, printables, templates, guides, design files — are the cheapest Etsy door to open, because there is nothing to ship and nothing to stock. The whole cash cost of opening can be under $35. What this door actually charges you is not money. It is time, and competition.
Below: every fee, dated and sourced, a calculator for your own numbers, and the honest version of who this door fits — and who it does not.
The fees, dated
| Fee | Amount | What it actually is |
|---|---|---|
| Shop set-up fee | $15–$29, one time | Charged at signup since 2024; the exact amount is shown when you open the shop. |
| Listing fee | $0.20 per listing | Each listing lasts 4 months, then renews at another $0.20 if it has not sold. |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | On the total the buyer pays, including the shipping you charge. |
| Payment processing (US) | 3% + $0.25 | Etsy Payments. Other countries differ slightly. |
| Regulatory operating fee (US) | Under 1% | A small country fee Etsy adds on top; it varies by country. |
| Offsite Ads | 12% or 15% | Only when a sale comes through Etsy's ads. Optional under $10,000/year in sales; required above it. Not a cost to open. |
Worked example, checked October 2026: on a $25 sale, the always-on Etsy fees (listing share, transaction, processing, regulatory) come to about $2.97. Fees recorded from Etsy's published Fees & Payments policy.
| Shop set-up fee | $15–$29 |
| First 20 listings | $4.00 |
| Design software | $0 on free tiers (Canva free, Google tools); paid tiers are optional |
| Total cash before your first sale | $19–$33 |

Copycat listings and crowded categories. Making the file is the easy half; being found is the work. The categories with the most obvious demand (generic wall art, basic planners) are also the most copied — a specific buyer with a specific problem beats a pretty file for everyone.
Don't start with this door if you have nothing digital to sell and no skill you are willing to spend a month learning — the listings are the job.
2–12 weeks of steady listing is a normal planning range for a first sale. Shops that list daily and answer a narrow need land at the fast end; shops that list five files and wait land at the slow end — or past it.

Etsy does not ask for one to open a shop. Your city, state, or country may have its own rules for running any business — that is a local question, and it applies to every door on this site, not just Etsy.
New shops can have a payment reserve and a deposit schedule that starts slower than an established shop's. Plan your cash flow as if the first sales pay out over the following weeks, not the same day.
Etsy allows AI-created work that you designed and disclose as required by its policies. What it does not allow is misrepresenting it. The bigger risk is sameness: AI-flooded categories are exactly where being found is hardest.
