Amazon vs eBay for beginners

eBay will let you list your first item this afternoon. Amazon will let you open an account this afternoon — and then, for a long list of categories and brands, politely decline to let you sell them until you have documents and history. That difference, more than any fee, is the beginner's real choice between the two giants.

Situation by situation

Your situationThe verdictWhy
Your first item is used stuff from homeeBayNo gates, free listings, sold prices to copy. Amazon's used-goods path is narrower and slower for one-off items.
You can source used books and media steadilyAmazon (the ladder)Books are the classic open rung: rarely gated, easy to grade, and Amazon's buyers pay for Prime-speed reliability once you climb to FBA.
You found a brand-name product to reselleBay — Amazon will likely gate itBrand approvals stop exactly this plan on Amazon, after the inventory is bought. On eBay it is simply a listing.
Fees on a $25 saleClose — eBay about $3.71, Amazon about $4.74Amazon's figure is the Individual plan shipped by you (referral 15% + $0.99). FBA changes it again. Fees are not the deciding factor here; gates and inventory are.
You want the deepest buyer pool for odd itemseBayThe weird, the old, and the one-of-one sell on eBay because collectors live there. Amazon's catalog model fits multiples of the same thing.
You want to build a reorder businessAmazon, climbed properlySold one thrifted book is a sale; a ranked listing that reorders monthly is an asset. That is a later-rung Amazon game — start it on the ladder, not with a container of product.

When the answer is neither

Neither, if your items are handmade or designed — both giants treat makers as suppliers, not sellers with a story; Etsy's crowd came for the story. And neither, this month, if your budget is under $25: the resale apps include eBay already at $0, and Amazon's ladder wants its first inventory money.

The verdict

Default beginner answer: eBay for your first sales, Amazon as the ladder you climb with the profits. eBay teaches you selling with no gatekeeper; Amazon rewards the seller eBay trained. Reversing that order is the expensive version of the same education.
